Description: Throughput in the emergency department is the result of practices both inside and outside the emergency department. This presentation is Part 2 of 2 of the patient throughput series and will focus on how Baystate Medical Center, a facility with 716 acute-care beds in Springfield, Massachusetts, addressed throughput in the emergency department and how performance in length of stay for inpatients and observation patients contributes to improving ED length of stay. Participants will hear about assessing opportunities, interconnectedness of throughput activities, and the keys to success. The presentation will also share challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and how they have impacted throughput initiatives.
- Provide a framework to help providers address throughput opportunities in the emergency department
- Discuss the upstream implications of performance in observation and inpatient length of stay
